Vata, Pitta and Kapha: What Is Your Prakriti?

Vata, Pitta and Kapha: What Is Your Prakriti?

In Ayurveda, no two people are exactly alike. Your body type, called Prakriti, is a unique blend of three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Understanding it helps a physician choose the right diet, lifestyle and treatment for you.

Vata: air and space

Vata governs movement. Balanced Vata brings creativity and energy. When it increases you may feel dryness, anxiety, gas, constipation, joint cracking and light, broken sleep.

Pitta: fire and water

Pitta governs digestion and transformation. Balanced Pitta gives sharp intellect and strong digestion. When it increases you may notice acidity, skin rashes, irritability, heat and loose stools.

Kapha: earth and water

Kapha gives structure, stability and lubrication. Balanced Kapha means strength and calm. When it increases you may feel heaviness, weight gain, congestion, sluggishness and excess sleep.

Why Prakriti matters

Two people with the same disease name may need very different care, because their Prakriti, digestion and lifestyle differ. That is why a personal consultation matters more than a general home remedy.
